Area educators flock to second annual STEM education conference

More than 200 area educators from 13 school districts across the region took advantage of the Greater Houston Area STEM Conference hosted by the University of Houston-Clear Lake and co-sponsored by University of Texas Medical Branch. The one-day event featured strategic presentations, hands-on activities and tours of state-of-the-art facilities. Also on hand were 29 STEM-related exhibitors displaying wares and answering questions. Featured keynote speaker Kenn Heydrick, the former Texas Education Agency Director of Science Curriculum addressed STEM education for the future. Post attendance surveys testify to the conference’s overall success with 95 percent of respondents reporting they plan to attend next year’s conference, and a like number reporting they have already shared information received at this year’s event.

UHCL faculty win education research award

Three University of Houston-Clear Lake faculty members have been named winners of the prestigious American Education Research Association’s (AERA) Michael Pyryt Collaboration Award, presented by its Special Interest Group for Research on Giftedness, Creativity and Talent for their joint research. Associate Professor of Educational Foundations Carol Carman, Assistant Professor of Psychology Christine Walther and Professor of Psychology Robert Bartsch will receive the award at the annual AERA meeting in New York City in April. Walther and Bartsch are with UHCL’s College of Human Sciences and Humanities; Carman is in the College of Education.

UHCL awards STEP scholarships to teacher candidates

The University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education celebrated the kickoff of its Success Through Education Programs’ spring semester with a luncheon recognizing its scholarship recipients. STEP is a collaborative effort between UH-Clear Lake, five area school districts, and five community colleges designed to create opportunities for students to explore teaching as a profession and to prepare them to become certified teachers.

Registration underway for Greater Houston Area STEM Conference

Registration is underway for educators from across the Houston-Galveston and surrounding areas to attend the 2018 Greater Houston Area STEM Conference on Saturday, March 3, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. The event is being co-sponsored by UH-Clear Lake and University of Texas Medical Branch. Titled, “New Horizons and Innovations in STEM,” the conference will feature concurrent presentations, STEM-related exhibitors, door prizes, and tours of current state-of-the-art research facilities. Keynote speaker is Kenn Heydrick, a 35-year educator with a rich STEM background including serving as the Director of Science Curriculum at the Texas Education Agency.

New CEP director seeks to increase center’s presence, offerings

Tucked inside the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Arbor Building is a little known resource just waiting to be discovered. The Center for Educational Programs, housed in UHCL’s College of Education, offers academic and outreach services to students, schools, school districts, and members of the community. The center’s new director, Tonya Jeffery, is on a mission to make certain the word gets out, even as she works to further expand its offerings.

Faculty and students of the University of Houston-Clear Lake College of Education Counseling Program delivered boxes of donated shoes, coats and books they collected for the young children at Hollibrook Elementary School in the Spring Branch Independent School District. The school’s counselor, Juan Sosa-Tirado, is a 2015 graduate of the UHCL school counselor program.

Michael Marquez, principal at McWhirter Elementary School in the Clear Creek Independent School District and home to the University of Houston-Clear Lake Professional Development Laboratory School, has many things to be proud of: a family, a successful career in education, a doctoral degree and time served in the U.S. Marine Corp. There is one thing, though, he says makes him most proud: having fulfilled his parents’ American dream, which wasn’t as easy as it might seem.

Two University of Houston-Clear Lake College of Education pre-service students along with a UH-Clear Lake faculty adviser got behind-the-scene peaks at several NASA Johnson Space Center projects while attending a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professional development workshop onsite at the center this summer.
