UHCL spring commencement ceremonies May 19 at NRG Arena

Over 1,200 University of Houston-Clear Lake students are expected to cross the stage at two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 19, at NRG Arena, 1 NRG Park. Houston. A total of 715 will receive bachelor’s degrees; 479 will receive their master’s degree and 10 will receive their doctorate.

Self-taught siblings amaze indie music fans, bring blues and funk to Bayou Theater

The very first song Glenn Jr. and Alex Peterson learned to play together when they were children was “Amazing Grace.” Alex, who was about 9 at the time, played violin and his then-11-year-old brother played guitar. Almost immediately, they both realized this was “it” for them. Now, the Peterson Brothers have become fixtures on Austin’s indie music scene and are bringing their blend of blues, funk, and jazz to the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m.
UHCL student developing protocol for police response to people with autism

Encounters between law enforcement and people on the autism spectrum can easily end badly for a number of reasons. Karlie Hinkle, who is working toward her master’s in behavior analysis at University of Houston-Clear Lake, hopes to help educate campus police as well as the Houston Police Department by creating a training protocol that coaches officers on how to adapt their approach for people with autism.

UHCL program helps nurses with lapsed licenses relaunch careers

Registered nurses whose licenses have lapsed need not look far for a way back to the workplace. Starting June 4, University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Continuing Education program is offering courses that will help nurses who have been away from the nursing workplace for four years or more to reactivate their RN license and relaunch their careers.

Mercury to pair Tchaikovsky, Elgar in Bayou Theater 'Serenade'

Mercury is pairing two emotionally resonant, sweet-sounding works – Tchaikovsky’s homage to his idol Mozart and Edward Elgar’s sentimental early compositions – in a concert titled Strings Serenade, to be performed at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on April 19 at 7:30 p.m.
UHCL author's book nominated for prestigious Lambda award

William T. Hoston, author and associate professor of political science at University of Houston-Clear Lake, has recently published a book that has been nominated for a 2019 Lambda Literary Award. The award identifies and honors excellence in LGBTQ publishing and is the most prestigious LGBTQ literary award achievable. Hoston’s book, “Toxic Silence: Race, Black Gender Identity and Addressing the Violence against Black Transgender Women in Houston,” was nominated in the LGBTQ Studies category.
