Are you pursuing a career or a calling? UHCL panel explores life choices

College is a time for students to seek and prepare for their path in life. Often, they become fixated on finding a lucrative career instead of considering their life’s real purpose. The 2018-19 Common Reader is “Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work,” by Dave Isay, and on Feb. 13 at 3 p.m., a panel of faculty and community members will share how they ultimately found their calling in life, ending up in careers very different from what they had trained for in college.

Undergraduate student researcher to present findings to legislators in Austin

Texas Undergraduate Research Day is an annual event that provides the opportunity for undergraduate students engaged in research to showcase how their work positively impacts Texas to state legislators. This year, Assistant Professor of Information Technology Lisa Lacher and her research assistant, senior Cydnee Biehl, were selected to represent University of Houston-Clear Lake at the Texas State Capitol Building at the event, themed “Transforming Texas through Undergraduate Research,” to be held in Austin on April 1.

RN-BSN grad credits UHCL profs with successful return to nursing career

Shadia Yan loved her career as a registered nurse, and decided to advance her training with a bachelor of science in nursing. She graduated in December 2018 with her RN-BSN from University of Houston-Clear Lake at Pearland. Although it was a challenge to balance work, her education and a family, she said she got through it with plenty of support and encouragement from her professors in the nursing program.

UHCL prof to co-author guide to culturally appropriate mental health services

Roberta Leal, assistant professor of social work at University of Houston-Clear Lake, has been invited to co-author a training guide for professionals to provide culturally appropriate mental health services in school settings. The opportunity is provided through the National Hispanic and Latino Mental Health Technology Transfer Center funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Teaching in prison is a transformative experience for students and professor

Shreerekha Subramanian grew up in India with parents who put everything into giving her a good education. Still, she describes a “bibliographic deficit” which has informed the rest of her life as a professor of humanities at University of Houston-Clear Lake. Her any-book-is-worth-reading upbringing, coupled with a pivotal teaching experience in a Baltimore high school, have combined to make her a teacher and mentor at her core – or, as she would describe herself, a “translator” whose mission is to make education radically inclusive.

Samuel Gladden accepted an invitation to write a chapter on rock icon David Bowie, to be included in a book tentatively titled “David Bowie and Romanticism.” Gladden is associate dean and Professor of Literature in the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Human Sciences and Humanities.

UHCL professor’s final research challenges visualization of DNA

Groundbreaking DNA research conducted by a retired University of Houston-Clear Lake professor who died in 2012 was published posthumously in late 2018 by two researchers who credit him for his discoveries. Robert C. Hopkins, who joined UH-Clear Lake in 1976 and became a professor of chemistry and biophysics, was instrumental in changing the way scientists visualize DNA.

This photo was taken on our last real day of the trip, while we were in Salala. We started the day off by going to a Lulu Hypermarket, which is a lot like Walmart on steroids, to load up on some Omani food for a picnic, and then we drove to this beautiful spot near some waterfalls. After eating, we noticed that a few friendly camels had wandered over.
