Mercury to bring Mozart's final three symphonies to life at Bayou Theater

In just 35 short years on Earth, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed over 600 works, including 41 symphonies, writing the last three within about six weeks at the end of his life. On Feb. 7 at 7:30 at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater, Mercury will perform its own special interpretation of these three masterpieces. Antoine Plante, the orchestra’s artistic director, says these three works are part of the ‘golden age’ of Mozart and bringing these symphonies together in a trio shows how one person could compose music that impacts the world profoundly, even more than 200 years after his death.

Principal as Instructional Leader certification prepares administrators-to-be for excellence

In order to better address the evolving needs of Texas’ schools and communities, the State Board for Educator Certification adopted new standards in 2016 for rising principals wishing to become certified. In November 2018, University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education’s Principal as Instructional Leader certification was approved by the Texas Education Agency, and now, says Associate Professor of Educational Leadership John Decman, students leave the university with Advancing Educational Leadership certificate and the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System certification and are ready to perform on Day One.
UHCL alumnus wins award for dissertation on innovative treatment for hair-pulling disorder

Eric Lee credits the training and support he received from his professors and advisers at University of Houston-Clear Lake while getting his master’s degree in clinical psychology. He says it enabled him to bridge directly into a doctoral program at Utah State University in Logan. His dissertation, which focuses on the treatment of an obsessive-compulsive disorder related to hair-pulling, recently won the prestigious Leonard Krasner Dissertation Award, given by the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies at the annual conference in Washington, D.C.
Apollo Chamber Players adds other-worldly theremin to the mix

The Apollo Chamber players will introduce a unique sound experience to their audience at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater stage, on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Houston-based ensemble is featuring world-renowned German theremin musician Carolina Eyck to share the eerie, arresting music of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, as well as Eyck’s new works composed for theremin and string quartet in a show titled, “Theremin Fantasies.”
UHCL alumnus wins recognition for promoting literacy in school, community

Matthew Panozzo’s passion for teaching kids to become lifelong readers can’t be contained in a single classroom. Committed to promoting literacy in his classroom and in his community, Panozzo, who received his master’s in reading from University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2016, is one of 30 literacy leaders named to the International Literacy Association’s 2019 “30 Under 30” list. The prestigious list celebrates rising leaders in the field of literacy and includes a cohort of young innovators and visionaries creating positive change in the global literacy landscape.
UHCL scores big in nationwide rankings for quality, affordability

University of Houston-Clear Lake received 17 top-10 rankings nationwide from three organizations that rate the best colleges for academics, value and student success and other metrics that help students decide where to go to school. Two of the organizations also break out rankings by state. UH-Clear Lake garnered five spots in top-10 rankings for best in Texas.
UHCL students study ancient artifacts at excavation site in Oman

We spent the day with our colleagues from Sultan Qaboos University and Temple University at their excavation site in Saham, Oman. The site is one of the oldest known settlements in the Arabian Peninsula and its inhabitants were in touch with other civilizations in the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia.
Newly graduated transfer student credits faculty's guidance, support with success

In 2014, Ronnie Daruwala began his freshman year at a large university in Texas as a biotechnology major. He soon found out that he didn’t think he could be successful there. Coming from a small high school in Pasadena, Daruwala, a 26-year-old Friendswood resident, said he felt lost and began dreading going to class. After trying to make a go of it for two years, he said there were a couple of “last straw” episodes that convinced him it was time to transfer to University of Houston-Clear Lake.
