UHCL, Freeman Library partner to foster reading and writing skills in small children

Educators are always looking for new, creative ways to help small children become comfortable with reading and writing. For Elaine Hendrix, Heather Pule and Roberta Raymond, all professors in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education, facilitating a partnership with Clear Lake City-County Freeman Branch Library so that future educators can help parents of small children fall in love with books is a step toward making that happen.
UHCL students begin cross-cultural experience on study trip to Oman

Eleven University of Houston-Clear Lake students and Anthropology Professors Maria Curtis and Dawit Woldu began the New Year by boarding a plane Jan. 3 to embark upon an eye-opening, two-week study trip to Oman. This is UH-Clear Lake’s fourth annual study trip to the sultanate, and includes visits to all the major historic and religious sites in Oman, excursions to major cities and mountain villages, an overnight stay in the Wahiba desert, and meetings with Omani government officials.
'Phantom' star Kristen Hertzenberg brings Broadway hits to Bayou Theater

Well-known for her role as Christine in the Las Vegas production of “Phantom of the Opera,” classically-trained Kristen Hertzenberg will take center stage at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater to perform an evening of classic showtunes on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Support from adviser helps student juggle career, family to complete coursework

University of Houston-Clear Lake senior and transfer student Matthew Helle didn’t have an easy time juggling a 60-hour work week, a family and rigorous college classes, but with the constant guidance and support of his transfer adviser, Kristi Rickman, he will graduate with his bachelor of science in computer information systems in May 2019.
Hospitality, grace themes of one-woman show coming to Bayou Theater

In her solo show, “Peacocks and Porches,” Walker presents a show that is part memoir, part poetry, and part Southern fiction at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
Encourage dads to share their experiences with preterm birth

Men think of themselves as protectors. This is true even as they transition to fatherhood. But in truth, becoming a parent is often as stressful for men as for the women carrying the baby, especially in the case of a preterm birth, when an infant is born before 37 weeks’ gestation. In this situation, it’s much more than just the birth of a baby—it’s an extraordinary life situation, and since birth is an occasion that focuses almost exclusively on mother and baby, the feelings of a preterm father often fall by the wayside. By providing the dad the emotional support he needs during this uncertain time, the entire family will benefit.

Artist makes strong statement on climate change at upcoming exhibition in UHCL's Art Gallery

Instead of showing frightening statistics, protest signs and scientific arguments, artist Julie Heffernan’s exhibition, “When the Water Rises,” uses color and detailed imagery to support an introspective, passionate discussion for the message she wants to spread: climate change is real. The traveling exhibition, originated by the Louisiana State University Museum of Art, will open at University of Houston-Clear Lake Thursday, Jan. 24 and run through Thursday, March 21, with an opening preview reception on Jan 23, 5-7 p.m.
