February 19, 2019 | UHCL Staff

Behavioral and mental health professionals from throughout the state can learn about current issues facing their discipline at University of Houston-Clear Lake April 12, 8:15 a.m. – 6 p.m. The 2019 Emily G. Sutter Symposium for Mental and Behavioral Health will provide an information-packed day addressing a variety of mental health topics as well as provide continuing education units for attendees.

“We have continued to build on past successes and believe this year’s symposium will be better than ever,” said Cynthya Campbell Palmer, director of UH-Clear Lake’s Psychological Services Clinic.

Keynote speaker for the event will be founder of the Peace of Mind Foundation Elizabeth McIngvale, who also serves as an assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. Her research focuses on obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, mental health stigma and access to mental health care.

Admission to the symposium is $140, with discounts available to public school employees, retirees and university students.

The symposium is named for UHCL Professor Emerita Emily Sutter, who joined the faculty in 1981 and twice served as interim dean of the College of Human Sciences and Humanities. While serving as interim dean, she proposed the symposium’s creation.

UHCL’s Psychological Services Clinic is a training clinic for graduate programs in clinical psychology, family therapy, and school psychology. The clinic serves the community by providing mental health services to individuals, families, and couples. It also houses the university’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities, which provides services to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and extreme behavior problems.
