University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Human Sciences and Humanities possesses an extensive permanent art collection that includes prints, ceramics, sculptures
and painting from all over the world.
“The university acquired these pieces in a lot of different ways,” said Karen Fiscus,
UH-Clear Lake’s art gallery exhibitions coordinator. “We have pieces that artists
donated after coming to campus and teaching workshops. Some are from students and
alumni, and some are gifts that our professors received while traveling.”
UH-Clear Lake's HSH Permanent Collection will display selected works from July 25-Aug.
22 in the UHCL Art Gallery.
Some of the art and artists comes from as far away as Vietnam, Turkey, Mexico, China,
Slovakia, Serbia and other international locations, as well as from all around the
U.S.
Fiscus said that some focal points in the exhibition were the Chinese pieces, including
a spectacular hand-carved ivory boat. “The Chinese art was a donation from a family
in Galveston,” she said. “These Chinese pieces are on display for the first time.”
She said that generally, the items are kept in storage units on campus. “But faculty
and staff can request a certain piece be displayed in their offices or suites.”
