Bayou Theater reschedules season opener post-Harvey
September 7, 2017 | UHCL Staff
Tropical Storm Harvey washed out Mercury: The Orchestra Redefined’s “Bach and Piazzola,”
the first scheduled performance of the 2017-18 season at University of Houston-Clear
Lake’s Bayou Theater. But concertgoers can take heart—Harvey did not damage the theater,
and the show will go on.
“We have been looking forward to Mercury’s concert series so much, and I’m glad we’ve
been able to reschedule this show, entitled ‘Baroque Masterworks’ for Thursday, Sept.
14 at 8 p.m.,” said Bayou Theater Executive Director Alex Malone. “All tickets for
the ‘Bach and Piazolla’ concert scheduled for Aug. 31 will be honored, so there’s
no need to exchange tickets.”
Malone said that he’s asking patrons unable to come to the Sept. 14 performance to
donate their tickets to a student or the value of the ticket to the Hawk Emergency
Fund, created to offer financial assistance to UH-Clear Lake students facing hardships
after Harvey.
“Mercury is a longstanding Bayou Theater partner and a UHCL fan favorite,” Malone
said. “We hope people will come and listen to some uplifting baroque favorites from
masters like Vivaldi, Bach, Revel and Handel.”
Since so many UHCL students are coping with serious difficulties post-Harvey, Malone
said the Bayou Theater will donate the proceeds from the concert and the pre-concert
reception to the Hawk Emergency Fund.
“As was the plan previously, we are still celebrating the opening of the theater season
along with the opening of Friday Morning Continuing Education with a wine and light
hors d’oeuvres reception and then we’ll proceed to the concert,” Malone said. “We’re
inviting our ticket holders to enjoy the reception from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Forest
Room of the Bayou Building and enjoy some time to mingle as well as hear a short report
on UHCL’s post-Harvey status from President Ira K. Blake.”
Mercury Artistic Director Antoine Plante will also be at the reception to answer patrons’
questions about the performance, as well as Samuel Gladden, Ph.D., who will speak
briefly about the opening of the Friday Morning Continuing Education program.
Malone said that in light of the challenges many UHCL students are now facing due
to Harvey, patrons are encouraged to support the Hawk Emergency Fund. “We are happy
to contribute by donating the proceeds from the reception and the concert to the fund,
and our patrons are invited to make their donations in person or online,” he said.
“We can’t let Harvey sink our students’ goal to remain in college and pursue their
education.”
