Dailey and Vincent find bluegrass is greener at UHCL's Bayou Theater
May 6, 2019 | UHCL Staff
Dailey and Vincent, one of the most celebrated bluegrass duos in the last decade,
will return to University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m to perform their unique blend of American music — a combination
of bluegrass, country, gospel and folk. The twice-Grammy-nominated Grand Ole Opry
inductees love to come to Texas and intend to make Houston a regular concert tour
stop.
“We are so excited to be coming back to Houston,” said Darrin Vincent, who sings lead
vocals and plays bass, guitar and mandolin. “We’re going to play a mix of everything
we do. It should be a very high-energy show.”
With additional band members, including a new tenor named Josh Cobb, Vincent said
the audience is in for something unique. “We like to entertain and laugh on top of
singing serious songs, and it’s been a lot of fun having new band members and seeing
the audience’s reaction to them,” he said. “We’ve also added some instruments, including
a banjo and a dobro, which is something like a guitar, but lays flat like an old-style
steel guitar. So, look for the new guys, but we’ll still be playing our old stuff
that people request, plus a lot of new songs.”
Their latest album, “Sounds of Christmas” was No. 1 on Billboard’s bluegrass chart
for 12 weeks. Their previous album, “Patriots and Poets,” includes International Bluegrass
Music Hall of Fame inductee Doyle Lawson and Academy Award-winning actor Steve Martin,
who has a speaking part on a song Vincent’s partner Jamie Dailey wrote called “California.”
The duo received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or
Group with Vocal in 2011. In 2012, they received a second Grammy nomination for Best
Bluegrass Album for “The Gospel Side of Dailey and Vincent,” and a third nomination
in 2013 for Best Bluegrass Album for “Brothers of the Highway.”
Vincent is a former member of Ricky Skaggs’ five-time Grammy award-winning band, Kentucky
Thunder. “I hope that everyone will want to come back and see us on the road, and
that the audience will enjoy themselves enough to tune into our weekly RFD TV show
on Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m.,” he said.
Tickets for this show will go on sale Monday, May 6, at 10 a.m. and will be reserved
seating. Purchase them online or by calling 281-283-3024.
