Farewell Angelina kicks off "Women and Wine" tour at UHCL's Bayou Theater

Named after a Bob Dylan song made famous by Joan Baez, Farewell Angelina, an all-female country group featuring four powerhouse vocalists and multi-instrumentalists,
will make University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater a stop on their “Women and Wine” tour on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
“The Bob Dylan song fit our band when we were looking for a name,” said vocalist Nicole
Witt. “Our fiddle player came to us with a list of potential names that were song
titles or pieces of lyrics, and we were looking for something unique, interesting
and beautiful. We settled on Farewell Angelina.”
Witt said the bandmates found each other after they’d all been working in different
parts of the country, as well as in Nashville. “We all had separate careers and I
met Ashley (Gearing) when we were both at the same record company,” she said. “We
wrote several songs together, and one became her second single for country radio in
2011.”
Their other two bandmates met when they were both playing fiddle and singing backup
for other artists. “Lisa (Torres) and Andrea (Young) were singing on Jason Aldean
and Trace Adkins’ records, and I was more of a songwriter at that time. After we’d
worked with other artists, we came together and sang and it was the most natural,
organic thing that ever happened,” she said. “We love doing this together. It’s a
gift. We did it separately, but we’re so much better together. We say that almost
every night.”
Witt said they are a country music group for sure, but they also love to perform songs
from other genres. “Some people call us Americana, but we’ve had most of our singles
on country radio. We’ve written songs for George Strait and for Dailey and Vincent’s
‘Brothers of the Highway’ album,” she said.
Featured songs on their “Women and Wine” are two fan favorite songs, said Witt. “We
always play ‘Ghosts’ and ‘More Problems,’ which were both on CMT. ‘Ghost’ in particular
stayed six weeks in the top three of the CMT Music 12 Pack Countdown, a fan-voted
contest,” she said.
The group has never played at UH-Clear Lake before. “Look forward to a high energy
show,” she said. “We love entertaining and we love to engage the audience. It’s like
a rolling party,” she said. “If you’re spending your evening with us, we want it to
be memorable and fun. Forget about your problems for a couple of hours.”
Entertaining a live audience is special to the group for many reasons. “We’re all
together and we can’t reproduce it,” she said. “It’s a special thing for us, it’s
important that we reach as many people as possible. Halfway through the show, we are
out at our table, and we want to meet and hug our fans. For us, it’s a connection
to the audience and we feel we’re now connected as friends.”
She encourages Farewell Angelina’s fans to like Farewell Family on Facebook, or follow the group’s Instagram at @farewellamusic. “We’re very serious about it,” she said. “We consider our followers to be our family.
We hope to take folks with us from Houston on our tour.”
