Grammy-nominated duo to bring bluegrass, country to Bayou Theater

Darrin Vincent remembers the exact date he and his partner Jamie Dailey formed the bluegrass-country-southern gospel duo Dailey & Vincent. “We got together on December 29, 2007, and 10 years to the day, we were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry Hall of Fame,” Vincent said. Remember this date: Wednesday, Feb. 21. That’s when the Grammy-nominated Dailey & Vincent will perform at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater.

“We are performing some of the music from our current album, ‘Patriots and Poets,’ as well as some of our other songs,” Vincent said. “The album features 15 original songs we wrote together. The songs from ‘Patriots and Poets’ include some cool guest artists like Doyle Lawson, and (Academy Award-winning comedian and actor) Steve Martin has a speaking part on a song Jamie wrote called ‘California.’”

The album fuses hard-driving bluegrass with polished acoustic country tracks played by Dailey, Vincent and their bandmates, Christian Davis on guitar and vocals, Jeff Parker on mandolin, guitar and vocals, Patrick McAvinue on the fiddle, and Jessie Baker on the banjo and guitar.

The group has released six albums. In 2011 it received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In 2013, it received a second Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album for the album, “The Gospel Side of Dailey and Vincent.”

Vincent, formerly part of Ricky Skaggs’ five-time Grammy award-winning band Kentucky Thunder, said the duo has never before performed in Houston. He added that he hoped the audience at the Bayou Theater would enjoy themselves enough to tune into the group’s weekly RFD TV show on Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m.

“We hope that everyone will want to come back and see us on the road, and tune in and see us and our great guest artists on our show,” he said.

He said that the group truly love to entertain audiences. “We are characters in our own right,” he said. “We make sure there are lots of laughs in the show, but there’s also some crying because some of our songs are very emotional. It’s 90 minutes of great music.”

Dailey & Vincent is the second in a series of three blues and bluegrass performances scheduled this season at the Bayou Theater. The event is sponsored by the City of Houston, Houston Arts Alliance, and Fishbone Safety Solutions.  For more information about upcoming concerts, visit www.uhcl.edu/bayou-theater
