Hawk and camel begin friendship in Oman on study trip

This photo was taken on our last real day of the trip, while we were in Salala. We went for a last group picnic to a site called Wadi Darbat. We started the day off by going to a Lulu Hypermarket, which is a lot like Walmart, to load up on some Omani food for a picnic, and then we drove to this beautiful spot near some waterfalls. This area is very green and more lush than other regions because of the monsoon season. You can find camels, goats and cows roaming about eating grass and other plants. Our guides tell us that they instinctively know it’s time to return home at sundown.

After eating, we noticed some very friendly, free-roaming camels. They’re very used to visitors. This one in particular was very sweet and loved being petted-- as soon as I began scratching behind her ear she laid down on the ground like a giant puppy. After I stopped, she got a bit huffy, stood up, and went to wake up her companion who can be seen lying down in the background.

It was such an amazing experience, and I like to think that the camel and I are still friends, even though she got mad at me for not giving her enough attention.
