The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a dinner event at South Shore Harbour Resort ahead of the University of Houston-Clear Lake-SQCC Energy and Environmental Stewardship Conference earlier this month. The dinner and the conference were attended by a delegation of Omani diplomats led by Her Excellency Hunaina S. Al Mughairy, ambassador of Oman to the United States. The evening’s keynote speaker was His Excellency Salim Bin Nasser Al Aufi, undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Oil and Gas.

University of Houston-Clear Lake will host the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center’s 10th Annual Conference Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The conference is a key educational initiative of the Sultanate of Oman and is titled, “UHCL-SQCC Energy and Environmental Stewardship: Oman and the U.S.”

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art Gallery is currently exhibiting a collection by New York based British artist Piers Secunda entitled “ISIS Bullet Hole Paintings,” exploring the epic scale of cultural destruction the terrorist group has wrought upon that region.

When University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Associate Professor of History Dan Haworth went on leave this year, it wasn’t because he was ready to stop teaching and being a faculty member. Last year, he received a devastating diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, forcing him to rethink his priorities. Despite the challenges he faces, Haworth is nowhere near done teaching. He still has a great deal to share with students, faculty and staff and the community.

UHCL coding academy empowers girls in STEM, fulfills Texas workforce goal

For 25 Houston-area middle school girls thinking about a career in a STEM-related field, the Soaring Hawks Girls Code Academy at University of Houston-Clear Lake was an eye-opening week of designing, creating, and digitally innovating. For Texas Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez III, it was a chance to see the Texas Workforce Commission Grant that provided them the scholarship to attend the academy in full action.
Anthropology prof and students win grant to study migrant health issues

Christine Kovic, professor of anthropology and cross-cultural and global studies, has been awarded a grant from Research Programs on Migration and Health, known as PIMSA for its Spanish acronym. The grant supports collaboration between a U.S. university and an institution in Mexico to better understand the factors and policies impacting the mental and physical health of migrants.
