Inside UHCL: Student Affairs associate dean chosen to lead association

An innovative leader, University of Houston-Clear Lake Associate Dean of Students Iliana Melendez has been chosen as president-elect of the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, known as TACUSPA.

Melendez serves as the chief judicial officer for students at UH-Clear Lake, overseeing processes involving student codes of conduct. Additionally, she oversees the emergency assistance provided for students through the Dean of Students Office, which has included reviewing and expanding the advocacy program as well as establishing a parent and family program.

“Having served in many roles since joining the TACUSPA, I am looking forward to working with colleagues across Texas as we prepare to host our 2020 conference in Austin,” said Melendez. “I am also looking forward to working with our Board of Directors on our strategic plan, receiving feedback from our membership, so that in the end, we can achieve a clear vision of growth for our diverse membership.”

TACUSPA is an association of administrators, staff, students, and others interested in the professional administration of student affairs programs in higher education. A premier state association, it is dedicated to the development, support and promotion of the student affairs profession in the State of Texas. Melendez is currently the president-elect through October 2019 and transitions to the role of president at the annual conference in October 2019.

As president-elect, Melendez seeks volunteers who would like to form part of the team that will be preparing and planning for the association’s annual conference.

“Iliana’s background as a Student Affairs professional practitioner have prepared her to lead our state organization, known as TACUSPA, as it supports and challenges both new and seasoned professionals to be exceptional student developers,” said Dean of Students David Rachita. “Iliana brings a wide breadth of knowledge and experience that will greatly aid and lead the organization. We are proud for her to be representing UHCL and our division at the state level.”
