Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancer have increased because of modern
diet and lifestyle. The Low Carb Houston Conference at the University of Houston-Clear
Lake on Oct. 25-27 has been organized to address and examine nutritional strategies
to improve chronic disease. Health care providers, scientists, nutritionists and other
experts in the field will examine many facets and nuances of carbohydrate restriction
to improve metabolic consequences and chronic diseases arising from a standard American
diet during the event in the university’s Bayou Theater.
Practicing clinicians, health policy experts and community friends are invited to
attend and learn from industry leaders in nutritional research and medicine. “The
main goal of this conference is to help individuals learn the profound benefits of
proper nutrition and to inspire attendees to adopt a healthy lifestyle,” said Program
Director and UH-Clear Lake Associate Professor in Exercise and Health Sciences William
Amonette. “Our internationally renowned group of speakers will use research evidence
and clinical experience to demonstrate how a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet can help
with weight loss, prevent many chronic diseases, and improve quality of life.”
“We plan to share transformational stories from people with metabolic consequences
of obesity, who have adopted the low-carbohydrate, high-fat lifestyle and have experienced
profound weight loss but has also improved but their health and well-being,” said
Program Director and local cardiologist Dr. Nadir Mir Ali. “This conference will change
the way many think in regards to diet, nutrition and healthy life.”
In addition to Amonette and Ali, the conference will be enhanced by an experienced
duo, Biochemical Engineer Ivor Cummins and Dr. Jeffry Gerber, M.D. These individual
have dispersed the art and science of a low carbohydrate life style for the last three
years through an annual Low Carb Conference in Breckenridge, Colorado. These four
program directors have put together a list of speakers to address insulin resistance,
lipoprotein (cholesterol) metabolism, time restricted feeding (fasting) and nutritional
ketosis to name just a few areas that will be explored in detail during the conference.
The attendees will also have a chance to interact with the conference faculty one
on one during breaks and Q&A.
The Low Carb Houston Conference is being hosted by UHCL’s new Exercise and Nutritional
Health Institute, a community-based research, education and training institute designed
to improve the health of individuals in Bay Area Houston. The institute will be housed
in the university’s state-of-the-art Recreation and Wellness Center scheduled to open
in August 2018.
