UHCL honors veterans at ceremony

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education winter series continues Feb. 22 with two lectures.
At 9 a.m., UHCL Adjunct Instructor of History William Powers examines the legacy of the Civil War and the unresolved conflict that continues to haunt the American experience in a session titled, “Rethinking the Civil War: Yesterday’s Headlines as Today’s News.” The lecture is a highly requested update of one Powers delivered over a year ago.
At 11 a.m., educator Alvinice Oliviera Powers will lead a virtual journey through “Brazil Off the Beaten Path.” From the Amazon Rainforest to the magnificent Iguazu Falls to some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, Brazil has the greatest biological diversity in the world.

David Alexander, director of the Rice Space Institute, will discuss how the activity of the sun influences Earth’s space environment on Feb. 25 as part of University of Houston-Clear Lake’s ongoing Physics Lecture Series.
Space weather has important ramifications for society, in that it can create electromagnetic hazards that affect communications, power grids and satellite operations.
The series is 7 p.m. each Monday through April 29 in room 1203 of the STEM and Classroom Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The lectures are free. University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Cyber Security Institute continues its Certified Network Defender training in Session 2 of the course, Feb. 25-29, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Atrium I of the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
Certified Network Defender is a vendor-neutral, hands-on, instructor-led comprehensive network security certification training program. It is a skills-based, lab intensive program based on a job-task analysis and cybersecurity education framework presented by the National Initiative of Cybersecurity Education (NICE).
