UHCL summer art school for kids, young adults enrolling now

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art School for Children and Young Adults offers art classes beginning either June 5 or June 6 for students ranging from age 3½ to 12th grade.

Students of all ages are encouraged to progress at their own pace and acquire skills appropriate to their own developmental level. For elementary-age and younger students, the course, “Art of England,” will inspire their creativity through multiple art techniques. For middle-school and older students, the “Advanced Art” course’s curricula change each semester to accommodate returning students. Specialized courses include drawing and painting, collage, printmaking and Claymation. Prices range from $100-$130 depending on the selected class. All materials are included as students create with clay, paint, oil pastels, markers and more.

Hands-on cybersecurity camp for high schoolers

High school juniors and seniors should enroll now to gain hands-on experience with network configuration, Linux, vulnerabilities scanning and more in University of Houston-Clear Lake Cyber Security Institute’s summer day camp June 5-8.

Cyber Security Summer Camp participants will explore the world of cybersecurity through speakers, activities and games. Registration is $300.

Learn a new language this summer

Planning that trip of a lifetime? Learn Italian, Japanese, French, Spanish or other languages in the Foreign Language and English Enhancement Program at University of Houston-Clear Lake. Registration is May 15 – June 5 for classes beginning June 5 and running through July 21.

Group classes are kept small, with a focus on conversational skills. Courses are taught by instructors fluent and with advanced degrees in the language they teach.

The course costs $145 for the group sessions, $300 for five hours of private instruction or $600 for 10 hours of private instruction. All classes are offered noncredit, but continuing education units can be earned for successfully completing the course.

UHCL student publication takes 18 statewide awards

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s student publication The Signal took 18 statewide awards – including five first-place finishes – at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association’s annual convention in Dallas.

The awards recognized student journalists’ work produced during the 2016 academic year. The Signal also won four national awards from Columbia Scholastic Press Association for digital media produced in 2016, said Taleen Washington, UHCL’s director of student publications.

The state association awarded The Signal first place in advertising design, news story, interactivity, interactive graphics and community engagement. The publication also took four second-place, three third-place and six honorable-mention awards. In the national competition, The Signal was honored with second place in general feature writing, third place in news writing and two honorable mentions.
