Something for everyone at UHCL’s Bayou Theater

April 20, 2017 | Jim Townsend

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater continues its eclectic spring performances with two comedies, an original drama and The Revelers, a Grammy-nominated Zydeco/swamp-pop/Cajun-dance band out of Louisiana.

“Over the last six months, we have dramatically expanded the offerings at the UHCL Bayou Theater,” said Managing Director Alex Malone, commenting on a season that included the world’s longest-running Shakespearian theater troupe and most recently, a concert that fused classical music with rhythm and blues.

“Each of these shows could bring in a completely different audience, and that is the beautiful challenge of being nestled in this wonderful community. There is not a single show that will speak to everyone, but I am hoping that by expanding the offerings in to different genres, everyone can find something on our season that excites them.”

Coming up at Bayou Theater:

  • Lone Star Feminist, April 24, 7-10 p.m.: UHCL Lecturer of Communication Andrea Baldwin explores cultural identity in this one-woman dramatic performance written by her. Tickets are $5 for everyone.
  • CCISD Improv Troupe, April 28, 7 p.m.: Improvisational comedy teams from Clear Creek Independent School District high schools will collaborate to bring a night of comedy and fun. Tickets for the event are $5 for students and seniors, and $7 for adults.
  • The Last Laugh Before Finals, April 29, 7:30 p.m.: A lineup of Houston-area comedians, including Andy Huggins, Albert Deleon, Alfred Kirk, Mairéad Dickinson, Grady Pruitt and Ki Egenti, the show intends to leave you laughing all the way through finals. Tickets are $5 for UHCL students and $10 for the public.
  • The Revelers, May 6, 8 p.m.: A mix of swamp-pop, Cajun, country and zydeco music, The Revelers gained national recognition with a nomination for Best Regional Roots Music Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Tickets range from $10-$28.

“I think these offerings really are starting to speak to the diverse audience and all the different types of entertainment and cultural offerings the Bayou Theater can bring to the Houston Bay Area,” Malone said. “We are just now dipping our toe in the water of an expanded season and it is going to be incredibly exciting to watch us grow.”

The Bayou Theater is located in UH-Clear Lake’s Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. For more information and to get tickets for any of the performances, visit www.uhcl.edu/culturalarts or call 281-283-2065.
