1.1 million people in southeast Texas are food insecure, meaning they cannot afford enough nutritious food to fuel a regularly healthy lifestyle, according to the Houston Food Bank. University of Houston-Clear Lake Art Gallery Assistant Director Karen Fiscus is doing her part to fight hunger and give back to the community by creating 101 ceramic bowls for the 15th Annual Empty Bowls Houston. The event is a grassroots effort by area artists, craftspeople, teachers and students to feed their communities. This year marks Fiscus’ seventh year participating, a contribution totaling more than 700 bowls. Attendees of the event can donate to select a handcrafted bowl for a simple meal, with proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank. This year’s event is May 18.
