UHCL Family Art Day brings families together with free events, crafts and fun

One of Alex Malone’s missions as managing director of University of Houston-Clear
Lake’s Bayou Theater is to offer more family-friendly events to make the arts more
accessible to the community. UH-Clear Lake’s inaugural Family Art Day, to be held
in the Bayou Building on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 1-4 p.m., is the first of what Malone
hopes will become a monthly Clear Lake tradition.
“The event’s headliner is Trout Fishing in America, a four-time Grammy nominated folk
rock and children’s music duo, performing at 2 p.m.,” Malone said. “Their performance
is ticketed. But FAD events will be ongoing throughout the afternoon, and it’s not
necessary to have tickets to the performance to enjoy the other events going on. All
FAD events will be free and open to the community.”
Malone said that UHCL’s Student Life Office, Art School for Children, the Office of
Student Orientation and New Student Programs, and UHCL Storytellers will be presenting
fun and engaging things for families to do. “Hunter the Hawk will have a story time
and pose for photos, and Chartwells, the university’s dining service, will be selling
kid-friendly foods,” he said. “All areas of our university are excited to participate.”
For now, Malone said, he plans to schedule a UHCL Family Art Day once a semester.
“We’re trying to build it up to become something sustainable and make it a regular,
vibrant part of the family arts and entertainment landscape for Clear Lake.”
