UHCL Pearland Campus tree planting 2016
Students, faculty and staff at University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus – joined by area residents – planted several varieties of oak at the annual Tree Campus USA event held November 2016. Shown (from left) are Marlon Flores, Amber Momin, Sierra Soliz and Brandon Ford. Under the supervision of City of Pearland urban forester Jerry Bradshaw, participants dug, filled and mulched in morning and afternoon sessions. Two of Bradshaw’s tips: 1. Don’t plant trees in the summer while their sap is still running. 2. Before planting, use a razor blade to score the tree’s root ball to encourage new root growth.

For the third consecutive year, the Arbor Day Foundation recognized University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus as a Tree Campus USA.

The recognition highlights accredited universities and colleges throughout the United States that demonstrate dedication to the care of campus trees.

“We are delighted by our continued designation,” said Kathy Dupree, executive director of operations at UHCL Pearland Campus. “We are even more delighted that our students and our community continue to stand with us in conservation stewardship.”

The designation has five requirements: a tree advisory committee, a tree-care plan for the campus, a dedicated budget for the tree program, an Arbor Day observance and a student service-learning project. Last November, UHCL Pearland Campus held a tree-planting workshop, facilitated by city of Pearland’s urban forester Jerry Bradshaw, which aimed to educate students and the community about tree care.

Founded in 1972, the Arbor Foundation has grown to become the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees, with more than 1 million members, supporters and partners. It began Tree Campus USA in 2008. Campuses in the program have planted more than 100,000 trees since then.
