UHCL receives increase in state funding
June 7, 2019 | UHCL Staff
Pending Texas Gov. Greg Abbot’s approval, University of Houston-Clear Lake will receive
an 11.7 percent increase in state general revenue for the 2020-2021 biennium over
2018-2019 funding levels.
Overall, the 86th Texas Legislature voted to boost funding for institutions of higher
learning. Across all four of its universities, University of Houston System will see a total increase of nearly $18 million in general revenue funds.
“We remain grateful to legislators and are pleased that they have continued their
strong support of the university,” said UHCL President Ira K. Blake. “Gov. Abbott,
Lt. Gov. (Dan) Patrick, Speaker (Dennis) Bonnen and the rest of our state lawmakers
have made education a priority.”
State general revenue, also known for higher education institutions as formula funding,
is enrollment-driven funding that limits students’ financial burden. Formulas assess
the cost of delivering a semester credit hour to a student and the formula funding
accounts for one-third of revenue of UH System universities.
UHCL continues to experience enrollment growth reaching an all-time high in the Fall
2018 semester with close to 9,000 students. With the addition of new buildings that
include the STEM and Classroom Building and Recreation and Wellness Center, students not only have expanded access to state-of-the-art educational facilities,
but, this August will also have the opportunity to live in Hunter Hall, the new on-campus
residence.
In addition to the general revenue increase, UHCL will receive $83,668 for Hurricane
Harvey recovery assistance for those things not covered by insurance or the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. The funding will assist with restoring lost revenues
sustained from students not returning, in addition to fees, services and wages incurred
but not reimbursable by insurance.
