UHCL's student publications receive Texas Intercollegiate Press Association honors

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Student Publications won 24 awards for work produced during the 2017 school year from Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. Student journalists are also competing in numerous categories for national awards from Columbia Scholastic Press Association for work done in digital media, with results to be announced. The Signal, the online student newspaper,  was awarded “Gold” status in critique from CSPA.

Six first-place honors were awarded: Krista Kamp took two first-place awards for static and interactive graphics; Regan Bjerkeli for news photo and Jeremy Gingrich for the blog, Sports Talk. The Signal staff also took two first-place awards for their coverage of Hurricane Harvey and the Houston Astros.

Eight second-place honors were awarded: The Signal staff took two for multimedia features; Bjerkeli for news photo; Kamp for static graphics; Anna Claborn for interactive graphics; Hunter Christian for cartoon; Scott Scarborough for feature news video, and Jonathan Hua and Teal Benson for multimedia sports story.

Seven third-place awards went to: Benson for static infographics; Robert Timme for in-depth reporting, and Joseph Cabrera and Codie McCauley for multimedia feature. The Signal staff took four of the seven third-place awards for overall newspaper design, overall web design, special edition design and multimedia sports story.

Bianca Salazar took honorable mention for critical review. Honorable mentions also went to Bjerkeli for feature photo and Scarborough for general column.
