Walker named interim UHCL president, Blake takes System post

University of Houston-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake has accepted an invitation from University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator to serve as special assistant to the chancellor. In her new role, Blake will develop student success initiatives across the University of Houston System’s four institutions.

As the ravages of climate change continue to batter the planet, scientists and experts keep offering their advice on how to keep our planet from warming. Geshe Jampa Wangchuk—Geshe meaning something equivalent to “spiritual father” in the Buddhist faith and similar to a doctorate in academic terms—spoke through an interpreter about the Buddhist perspective on climate change during a visit to UHCL last month.

Pathways to STEM Careers grant increased, extended

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $4,036,338 grant to University of Houston-Clear Lake targeting Hispanic/Latino/a/x and other low-income students in a STEM-related degree program. This new project builds upon the work of the "Pathways to STEM Careers" grant originally awarded in 2016 for about $3.7 million.

Qatar Charity partnered with University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Diplomacy Institute in a food distribution event that provided over 6,000 boxes of food to the community. Ninety-four volunteers assisted at the two drive-through events, which took place Saturday, Sept. 25 at UH-Clear Lake’s campus and the Pearland Recreation Center and Natatorium.

A group of six University of Houston-Clear Lake art education students, many of Hispanic descent, combined their talents to create a larger-than-life mural of the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The mural will be on display Sept. 29-Oct. 15.
