Nairobi scholar visits UHCL to continue work on establishing international partnership

University of Houston-Clear Lake has been expanding its study abroad options for students to include United States International University-Africa in Nairobi. To facilitate the two universities’ ultimate goal of being able to offer joint degrees, Philip Machoka, instructor of information systems and technology, spent 12 days as a visiting scholar at UH-Clear Lake to learn more about the university’s technology infrastructure.

Public education in the U.S. is known to have a persistent, well-documented problem: there’s a fairly significant achievement gap between white students and students of color. University of Houston-Clear Lake Distinguished Alumnus Preston Johnson Jr., grew up as a young African-American in a small town near Waco. It was difficult to envision a future where he was competing in college against students from bigger schools who had more advantages.
Neumann Library hosts discussion on virtual and augmented futures

The Neumann Library at University of Houston-Clear Lake will be hosting a panel discussion entitled “Virtual and Augmented Futures,” spotlighting augmented and virtual reality and their implications for teaching, learning and future careers. The event, to be held Tuesday, Feb. 18 from 2-3:30 p.m. is comprised of seven experts in fields including technology, software engineering, psychology and digital media.
West African Film Festival celebrates film, connects cultures

The West African Film Festival of Houston is showing two short documentary films at University of Houston-Clear Lake at Pearland on Monday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in room 179. The films recognize and celebrate African films in the U.S. with the intention of bridging cultural divides and presenting an accurate picture of West Africa to American audiences.
Anthropology students, prof travel to Texas border to study migrants' issues

UHCL alumna, former NASA engineer to lead Common Reader discussion

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Common Reader Program is launching its first event of the semester, entitled “A Conversation with Spare Parts’ Lisa Spence and Special Guests” on March 3 from 12-1:30 p.m. in the Forest Room. The book “Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and the Battle for the American Dream” by Joshua Davis, is this year’s Common Reader selection with the goal of creating community connections among students, as well as between them and their professors.

UHCL Art Gallery, Bayou Theater debuts cultural arts director

University of Houston-Clear Lake has named Eric Despard as its new director of cultural arts beginning Feb. 3, 2020. Despard will oversee the university’s Bayou Theater, its Art Gallery, as well as cultural arts educational programming at both UH-Clear Lake and UHCL Pearland. He has spent his 30-year career as a professional musician, a professor of music and art, and the director of both a community music school and university cultural arts programs.
