UHCL author's book nominated for prestigious Lambda award

William T. Hoston, author and associate professor of political science at University of Houston-Clear Lake, has recently published a book that has been nominated for a 2019 Lambda Literary Award. The award identifies and honors excellence in LGBTQ publishing and is the most prestigious LGBTQ literary award achievable. Hoston’s book, “Toxic Silence: Race, Black Gender Identity and Addressing the Violence against Black Transgender Women in Houston,” was nominated in the LGBTQ Studies category.

Omani ambassador returns to UHCL, plans conference on energy, environment

The Sultanate of Oman has chosen University of Houston-Clear Lake to be the location of a conference to discuss topics related to energy and environmental affairs to be held Oct 23. Her Excellency Ambassador Hunaina Sultan Ahmed Al Mughairy, who is also chair of the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center, visited UH-Clear Lake’s campus on March 6 to discuss preliminary plans for the conference with university officials and faculty.

University of Houston-Clear Lake Assistant Professor of Psychology Christine Walther will explore biases toward people who suffer from substance abuse as this year's honoree for the Marilyn Mieszkuc Professorship in Women’s Studies, an annual endowment that supports faculty research across a variety disciplines that involve gender issues.

College of Education profs collaborate on research exploring issues facing novice teachers

Four College of Education professors at University of Houston-Clear Lake have collaboratively published a book intended to resonate with educators or others involved in teacher preparation programs. The book, entitled “Facing Challenges and Complexities in Retention of Novice Teachers,” by Professors Denise McDonald, Michele Kahn, Leslie Gauna and Kent Divoll, is a research book investigating new teachers’ challenges and concerns in the Houston area, and illustrating the main factors that impact their decisions to remain in the teaching profession or leave.

UHCL prof's book aims to elevate political discourse, focus on common ground

Keith Parsons remembers a time when Republicans and Democrats could lead open discussions about politics with each other while maintaining the sense that one person could disagree with another without tossing insults. Parsons, who is a professor of philosophy at University of Houston-Clear Lake, has co-authored a book with his longtime friend, retired United Church of Christ minister Paris Donehoo, that he says was inspired by their mutual chagrin and astonishment at the 2016 election of Donald Trump to the presidency.
