Professors mentor, coach newly certified teachers through new program

This May 20, more than 80 University of Houston-Clear Lake teacher certification candidates will receive more than just their diplomas. Nearly 100 percent of them will not be searching for a job. They will already be employed teachers with contracts signed, ready to enter a classroom this fall. “It is an exciting and somewhat overwhelming time for them,” said Associate Professor of Special Education and Chairman of the New Teacher Mentoring Initiative Elizabeth Beavers.

UHCL honors nominee, finalists for Piper Foundation award

University of Houston-Clear Lake faculty and administrators hosted a luncheon April 23 to honor the 2017-18 finalists and nominee for the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation’s Piper Professor Award, a prestigious honor bestowed annually to 10 outstanding educators from Texas universities and colleges. Assistant Professor of Art History Sarah Costello is this year’s nominee. Since 1958, the Piper Foundation has recognized professors throughout Texas for their work in and outside the classroom. UHCL finalists for nomination are chosen by students. From the finalists, a panel of students and faculty, equally divided between the UHCL’s four colleges, chooses the university’s nominee. The Piper Foundation, through a statewide selection committee, chooses 10 nominees for the award. Costello was chosen as UHCL’s nominee from a field that includes nine other finalists.

Recognizing dedication and commitment, University of Houston-Clear Lake held the 40th annual Faculty and Staff Awards ceremony in early April. President Ira K. Blake with UHCL interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Glen Houston and interim Vice President of Administration and Finance Usha Mathew presented service awards and distinctive honors to staff and faculty. “As a team, we are quite advantaged to have many faculty and staff who decide to stay on our team,” said Blake. “As others have also done in the past – our honorees today have assisted with our growth as a student-focused, community-minded and partnership-oriented university.”

Most people don’t know that Antonio Vivaldi wrote hundreds of concertos because they’re only familiar with a few of them. Of those, four, known as “The Four Seasons,” are recognizable even to those who don’t consider themselves classical music fans. “It’s a favorite of all time,” said Antoine Plante, artistic director and conductor of Mercury, which will be performing “The Four Seasons,” in celebration of Mother’s Day on May 13 at 2 p.m. at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
UHCL's Art Gallery plans Spanish-themed fundraising ball

Students and visitors to University of Houston-Clear Lake may not realize they’re familiar with Spanish artist Pablo Serrano, but if they’ve walked in the front entrance of the Bayou Building, they’ve seen quite a significant example – or two – of his work. Serrano’s bronze sphere sculptures, titled “Spiritus Mundi,” are the largest displays of public art on the UH-Clear Lake campus. On May 19 from 5-8 p.m. in Atrium II, UHCL’s Art Gallery will be paying homage to Serrano’s art with the Mundi Ball, a fundraising event featuring a Spanish classical guitarist and a contemporary style flamenco dancer.
UHCL shares peer mentoring program success at national conference

Since fall 2017, University of Houston-Clear Lake has been successfully implementing a peer mentoring program as the integral part of a $3.7 million Hispanic Serving Institution STEM grant titled Pathways to STEM Careers. The grant supports Hispanic and low-income students pursing degrees in all science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Program Director for HSI STEM Grant Benito Vasquez, accompanied by Senior Academic Advisor for the College of Education Carmen Conley and three undergraduate students working as paid peer mentors in the program, attended an HSI national conference from March 24-28 in Chicago. They presented a proposal to other colleges nationwide, highlighting the successes and challenges they faced in building the peer mentoring program.

UHCL professor moderates international seminar on treatment of Holocaust remains

More than 70 years have passed since the end of World War II but horrific atrocities committed by the Nazis continue to be discovered. An international team of Holocaust and medical scholars met in Israel earlier this year and presented a new, internationally recognized protocol that prescribes the appropriate steps for properly dealing with Holocaust-era human remains. University of Houston-Clear Lake Associate Professor of History and Humanities Barbara Hales, president of the Center for Medicine After the Holocaust, moderated a webinar titled, “The Vienna Protocol: Ethical Issues in Dealing with Human Remains from the Holocaust” to promote the details on how to handle these remains.

Omani cave art to arrive at UHCL ahead of visit from ambassador

On April 4, a large crate filled with 35 photographs of prehistoric Omani cave art never displayed before on any American college campus was delivered to University of Houston-Clear Lake to be exhibited the week of April 16. Her Excellency Hunaina Sultan Ahmed Al Mughairy, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the United States will visit the UH-Clear Lake campus to view the exhibition of the collection.
