UHCL's Master of Arts in Teaching offers career-changers a great option

Changing careers after a few years in a certain field isn’t easy, but it’s possible. Monster.com, a global job-searching website, reports that 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in pursuing a different career and would like to make the leap. If you’re among them and your career aspiration happens to be teaching, University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education is offering a new Master of Arts in Teaching degree, open to students in fall 2018.

UHCL students share the art of deliberative dialogue to gain peacemaking, diplomacy skills

In a democracy, decisions should be made by ordinary citizens who discuss and evaluate issues. But often, said University of Houston-Clear Lake Assistant Professor of Political Science Se-Hyoung Yi, conversations about public issues devolve into debates or arguments, in which one side claims to know the answers to the issue and simply wants to win. “That’s why we train students in deliberative dialogue, so that they can moderate difficult topics that are key to contemporary democracy,” he said. A deliberative dialogue event is scheduled for Monday, April 19 at 4 p.m. in the Forest Room of UHCL’s Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The event is open to all undergraduate students over all majors.

Three University of Houston-Clear Lake faculty members have been named winners of the prestigious American Education Research Association’s (AERA) Michael Pyryt Collaboration Award, presented by its Special Interest Group for Research on Giftedness, Creativity and Talent for their joint research. Associate Professor of Educational Foundations Carol Carman, Assistant Professor of Psychology Christine Walther and Professor of Psychology Robert Bartsch will receive the award at the annual AERA meeting in New York City in April. Walther and Bartsch are with UHCL’s College of Human Sciences and Humanities; Carman is in the College of Education.

University of Houston-Clear Lake Professor of Chemistry Daniel Zerong Wang is recipient of a 2018 PROSE Award, the Association of American Publishers’ highest honors for professional and scholarly works. Wang won the award in the category of Multivolume Reference/Science for the “Encyclopedia of Physical Organic Chemistry,” published by the prestigious John Wiley and Sons, Inc. in 2017.

Anthropology students at University of Houston-Clear Lake had the opportunity to learn from 23 students and two professors from Fukushima University in Japan how they coped with the events of March 11, 2011. On that day, Fukushima suffered an earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami that triggered the nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to malfunction, causing the most significant nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
