International students at UHCL get critical internship experience virtually

During the spring 2020 semester, international students attending American colleges and universities found themselves in limbo due to closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. University of Houston-Clear Lake administration is still determining how to start the fall semester, but international students have been able to score summer internships, despite the challenges of home quarantine.
UHCL's Art School for Children keeps young artists engaged online

Nine-year-old budding artist Liam Lehnert has been spending part of his home quarantine time drawing, painting and gluing in front of a computer screen. He’s taking online classes at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art School for Children, and he has paid close attention to the instructions of Art School Director David Moya.
University narrows down topics for Quality Enhancement Plan

Three key topics have been selected for further exploration in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Quality Enhancement Plan. They center around “Educational Achievement” and include “Attending to Changes in Education in the 21st Century – Hawks ACE,” “Literacies for Lifelong Learning,” and “Writing Across Disciplines.” The final topic will be announced in late fall.
UHCL, NASA Alumni League launch Human Space Flight archive internship endowment

Although it’s been a challenge for college students to find paid internships given the closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NASA Alumni League Johnson Space Center Chapter and University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Alfred R. Neumann Library have a solution. They have created an internship that will offer an out-of-this-world experience.
Professors win grants to continue training families, educators of children with autism

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Autism Program has granted University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities two awards totaling more than $800,000. One grant will fund the Applied Behavior Academy for Teachers and Paraprofessionals. The second supports the Connecting the Dots program.

Ambassadors selected to be programs' 'face' in the community

Professors in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education have invited 10 graduate student alumni to become ambassadors for the university’s graduate programs. A February event initiated and celebrated these students who their professors hope will help market the graduate programs they’ve successfully completed and talk to prospective students.
Recreation and Wellness Center reopens, reduces fees

With strict safety protocols in place, University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Recreation and Wellness Center reopened June 1. Campus Recreation and Wellness Director Brian Mills said,“Engaging in physical activity is important all of the time, but during times of stress and isolation such as that surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, physical activity is even more important.”
Spot on the 'Today' show creates some graduation pomp despite the circumstances

Microbiology, nursing, and software engineering students collaborate on COVID-19 grant

University of Houston-Clear Lake students and professors are engaged in research to meet the urgent need to understand the spread of COVID-19. Assistant Professor of Microbiology Michael LaMontagne, Assistant Professor of Nursing Karen Alexander with biology students, in collaboration with registered nurses in UHCL’s RN-BSN program and others, have begun the project.
Joan Pedro appointed College of Education dean

University of Houston-Clear Lake has appointed College of Education Professor of Curriculum and Instruction Joan Pedro as dean of the college. Pedro has been serving as interim dean since March 2019. While serving as interim dean, Pedro created the college’s first Board of Advisors to assist in generating support for the college’s initiatives.

Most families experienced boredom and a sense of monotony during the lockdown, but for those living with an abuser, said Cynthya Campbell Palmer, director of University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Psychological Services Clinic, the quarantine mandate was the worst-case scenario.
