The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a dinner event at South Shore Harbour Resort ahead of the University of Houston-Clear Lake-SQCC Energy and Environmental Stewardship Conference earlier this month. The dinner and the conference were attended by a delegation of Omani diplomats led by Her Excellency Hunaina S. Al Mughairy, ambassador of Oman to the United States. The evening’s keynote speaker was His Excellency Salim Bin Nasser Al Aufi, undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Oil and Gas.

Del Castillo to bring Latin, blues, rock to Bayou Theater

About 20 years ago, Rick Del Castillo and his brother Mark collaborated on a musical project that was intended only to be a Christmas gift for their parents. Rick’s friend invited them to play the music at his company’s holiday party, and what was supposed to be a “one night only” event turned into a career spanning two decades. The group, Del Castillo, now six members strong, will be performing their original blends of Latin, blues and rock at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

For those who have never been to a Las Cafeteras concert, vocalist Hector Flores says it’s easy to describe what it’s like to experience a live performance. “It’s like the best backyard party you’ve ever been to, times two,” he said. The six-member group based in Los Angeles will use traditional instrumentation to perform “everything from Caribbean to California” at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

While in Louvain-la-Neuve, I gave a talk for museum professionals and scholars from the local region. Musée L, the university museum in Louvain-la-Neuve, has developed a number of projects with scholars from the university. These partnerships are part of an effort to develop stronger ties between the museum and the university.

Blake says that in order to keep pace with an ever-changing world, the institution will strive to teach present and future students not only how to self-adapt to change, but how to lead those changes. “Society needs people who know how to be compassionate and honest,” Blake told students, faculty, alumni and honored guests at her State of the University address.

During my residence as a visiting scholar in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, I’ve been giving talks to various audiences at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and at the Musee L, the university museum. I first gave a talk in a lecture series for graduate students and professors in art history and archaeology. I spoke about “object biography” as an approach to ancient artifacts.
