Blog: Art history prof collaborates with university museum in Belgium on new projects
October 21, 2019 | Sarah Costello
One of my goals while I’m in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, is to work with my colleague here, Dr. Annelies Van de Ven, on a new project in
the local museum, the Musèe L. We are both interested in the display of archaeological objects in museums; Dr.
Van de Ven, in her work, has created a series of new ways to help different audiences
understand the Cyrus Cylinder, one of history’s most fascinating objects. A few years ago, this piece was on temporary
display in Houston. Together, she and I are collaborating on ways to take the idea
of “object biography” and apply it to the primary display of an object in a museum.
The Musée L is a great place to undertake this project because it has such a diverse
collection of holdings, and has used creative curatorial approaches to weave it all
into a beautiful, inviting, thought-provoking set of exhibitions on themes related
to art, science and knowledge. Inspired by the innovative approaches already in evidence
at the museum, we are developing new ideas for the display of a set of small archaeological
objects made of bronze.
