Campus community welcomes first residents to new home in Hunter Hall

Move-in weekend at Hunter Hall, University of Houston-Clear Lake’s first on-campus residence hall, was a campuswide
affair filled with music, excitement and lots of helping hands. Volunteers from across
the university, including faculty, staff, and student greeters, arrived first thing
Thursday morning to welcome new undergraduate and graduate students, including junior
Ethan Omo, who was among the first students to cross the threshold of the brand new
building.
Omo, a Texas City resident who transferred to UH-Clear Lake from College of the Mainland,
said he was happy to live on campus because it gave him the opportunity to get to
know his professors and other students better. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and hopes to graduate in fall 2020.
“UHCL is near to my home, and its faculty is very professional and very friendly and
knowledgeable,” he said. “When I first came and I didn’t like my degree plan, the
faculty were really helpful. They helped me get on a track to do what I wanted to
do.”
From a financial standpoint, Omo said UHCL was very competitive to other colleges in the area. “I
chose to come here because I felt it was the right time to move away from my parents'
house because I wanted a little more independence,” he said. “After looking around,
I found the residence hall would have the same high quality I found across the campus
along with competitive tuition and living fees.”
He said that by moving on campus, he hoped to get more involved at the university
and join more clubs, like the new Archery Club. “I’m really looking forward to that,”
he said. “Since this is my first time living away from my parents, this is my time
to learn how to function as an independent adult.”
Omo said his brother was also attending UHCL, working toward his master’s degree.
“He’s had a great experience here as well,” he said. “I’m really excited about this
year.”
