The Clear Lake Association of Senior Programs, an outreach initiative of University of Houston-Clear Lake, will continue its monthly lectures to engage the community in lifelong educational opportunities.. CLASP, conceived and coordinated in 2002 by UH-Clear Lake Distinguished Alumna Marilyn Lunney and her husband, retired NASA Flight Director Glynn Lunney, will continue under the direction of Dwayne Busby, UHCL’s Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships.
“We intend to preserve the legacy of community education established by Marilyn and Glynn Lunney,” Busby said. “We will keep scheduling speakers to discuss topics that audiences in the university and our surrounding community find relevant and enriching. CLASP will keep moving forward.” Busby added that the Lunneys would remain involved with CLASP on a consulting and advisory basis.
To date, speakers and subjects have been varied and have included ambassadors, astronauts, artists, and have showcased the research areas of UHCL’s own professors.
The 2018-19 CLASP season will open in the Garden Room at UH-Clear Lake’s Bayou Building on Sept. 6 with a presentation entitled, “The Symbiotic Relationship between Exercise and Nutrition for Health,” given by UH-Clear Lake’s Associate Professor of Exercise and Health Sciences Bill Amonette, who also serves as executive director of UHCL’s new Exercise and Nutritional Health Institute, a community-based research, education and training institute designed to improve the health of individuals in Houston. Amonette’s research focuses on the effects of exercise and nutrition on rehabilitation and health outcomes in people with chronic disease and disability.
