Nineteen seniors preparing to graduate from University of Houston-Clear Lake with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree will be exhibiting their works in the 2020 Spring BFA Exhibition, opening on April 9 in the university’s Art Gallery, located on the first floor of the Bayou Building.
Assistant Professor of Art and Design Lauren Kussro said that the participating students had submitted five or more of their best works from across all media for the exhibition. “The art faculty chooses the strongest works from all the selections that reflect the students’ best work,” she said.
Kussro said that the students had been working with art faculty as mentors, receiving additional guidance and direction about their body of work and what choices to make for exhibiting.
“We have some standout pieces in this show,” she said. “Eve Maulsby did a large sculptural piece called “December Reflections” that she made with welded steel and wire. It’s a beautiful piece she did in (Associate Professor of Art) Jason Makepeace’s class. It’s impressive.”
Also, she said Rodrigo Gamarro’s large linocut print was another focal point of the show. “Linocut is a print process in which linoleum is carved, then inked with a brayer, then run through the press,” she said. “Rodrigo traveled to Italy recently and was influenced strongly by the art he saw there. His piece is called ‘La Pietà.’”
Kussro said the goal of the exhibition was to show the best of what the students were creating in the Fine Arts program. “We want people to understand what they’re accomplishing and that the faculty are really proud of their students and happy to show off what they’re doing,” she said. “People who come to the exhibition will see a wide range of really excellent work.”
As students complete their studies, Kussro said, some are going on to graduate school, some may receive internships, and some will be doing freelance work.
An awards reception will be held 5-7 p.m. on April 16, in which a Best in Show, a first-, second- and third-place winner will be announced.
