In anticipation of Black History Month, join artists and University of Houston-Clear Lake leadership at a special Black History Month Kick Off Celebration reception for the African American Artists Exhibition Thursday, Jan. 23, 5 p.m. Guests are invited to stay for an evening of music performed by Grammy-winning South African acapella vocalists Ladysmith Black Mambazo at 7:30 p.m. in the Bayou Theater. UH-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake will offer greetings to guests.
“We’re excited about partnering with the Bayou Theater on this reception, which not only celebrates the opening of the African American Artists Exhibition, but also serves as a reception for the upcoming Black History Month” said Art Gallery Coordinator of Exhibitions Karen Fiscus.
Likewise, Bayou Theater Box Office and Event Coordinator Michelle Robinson enjoys partnering with the gallery on events such as these.
“Whenever we have an opportunity to include additional artistic elements to our performances, we know our audience will enjoy it,” said Robinson.
Eleven Houston-area artists will be showcasing their work in the exhibition, titled “African American Artists,” which continues through March 21. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who first stepped onto the world stage when they collaborated with music legend Paul Simon on his iconic album “Graceland,” will share their message of peace and love through their music and dance.
Black History Month, held annually in February, pays tribute to and celebrates the accomplishments of African Americans, as well as recognizes the central role of blacks in U.S. history.
