Global Expo highlights UHCL's cultural diversity during International Education Week

University of Houston-Clear Lake hosted International Education Week activities from Nov. 18-21, joining a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The Global Expo was among the week’s spotlighted events, offering students on campus the opportunity to showcase their cultures and celebrate what makes UH-Clear Lake an international campus.
“Global Expo was a learning opportunity for students to engage with the different cultures and countries represented on our campus,” said Assistant Director of the Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Hana Zewdie. “We had booths set up representing students from Egypt, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Honduras, India and Pakistan, as well as information about a study abroad program in Nairobi, Kenya.”
Professor of Sociology Mike McMullen and Assistant Professor of Anthropology Dawit Woldu, spent five weeks in Nairobi last summer to establish a faculty and student exchange program between UHCL and United States International University. “We wanted to participate in Global Expo because we wanted to support the new energy and initiatives developing in the Office of Global Initiatives and Strategy and the Office of Education Abroad and Scholar Services,” McMullen said. “We want to let students know about the exciting study abroad opportunity to Kenya in the summer of 2020. Students will have a chance to attend USIA and explore Nairobi, take a train trip to historic Mombasa, and visit a national wildlife refuge.”
Zewdie added that Global Expo is an annual event, and this year, they decided to make it coincide with International Education Week. “The events of International Education Week were the result of a partnership between Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Office of International Admissions and Programs,” she said. “There’s a lot of sharing and talking about what we all have in common. Most of the booths had food and artifacts for people to look at.”
