Responding to the needs of many of its students, University of Houston-Clear Lake relaunched its Hawk Emergency Fund to assist students facing unexpected financial hardships as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds can provide much needed financial assistance up to $250 for eligible students.
“We know that many UHCL Hawks are challenged financially during this difficult time,” said UHCL President Ira K. Blake. “We are thinking of you. And, I am proud to say that many UHCL Hawk supporters that include faculty, staff and friends have helped strengthen this fund through their generous contributions.”
Students went on spring break March 9, which was extended the following week as the university established online classes as a result of COVID-19. Classes began again online March 23 and will continue online through the end of the spring semester, as well as during the summer sessions. The economic and physical changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an additional needs for many students who lost jobs, did not have access to Wi-Fi, nor had the technology needed to complete their work.
The Hawk Emergency Fund provides expenses to cover many issues including the following:
More than 130 gifts have been received for this important effort. Eligible students include undergraduate and graduate students who are in good standing. The funds are administered through the Dean of Students Office. To date, more than 50 Hawks have benefited from the support.
“We have very supportive alumni and community friends,” said Vice President of University Advancement Joseph Staley. “Student success is our top priority, and our university community supports that priority. We hope that this fund will help get our Hawks in need back on their feet and help them reach their educational goals.”
