Love the theater? Take your seat!

The Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake has been a campus and community
focal point for 40 years. But just as an actor needs to retouch his makeup before
making his entrance, and a musician needs to tune his instrument before the show,
the Bayou Theater is showing signs of needing to renovate and revitalize, so the show
can keep going on.
“The theater’s audience area has remained almost unchanged over all these years and
we’re beginning a transformation process,” said Bayou Theater Managing Director Alex
Malone. “With the incredible expansion of our programming, and support of the arts
in university leadership and in the community, now is the perfect time to revitalize
and renovate the seats and entrance area to benefit all of the theater’s constituents
and patrons, for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.”
Malone said that the seats and entrance to the theater need to be updated. “We need
everyone’s help,” he said. “The ‘Take Your Seat’ campaign gives patrons and theater
enthusiasts the chance to show their support for the performing arts at UH-Clear Lake
by purchasing a seat.”
With the purchase of a seat, patrons may create a personalized inscription, which
will be displayed on the arm of the seat for the life of the seat—perhaps another
40 years or even longer. “It’s a great way to honor a friend or loved one on a named
seat in the Bayou Theater,” he said. “This is a great way to show your personal or
businesses’ support of the arts in Clear Lake. Not only is it a personal declaration
of support, but also a wonderful marketing opportunity for local businesses.”
Annually, over 25,000 patrons come to the Bayou Theater. “Students, regional business
leaders, regular patrons of the arts and first time attendees, families, couples,
groups from down the road and around the country come through the Bayou Theater for
our wonderful presentations, rentals, university orientation and community partnerships,”
Malone said. “This permanent marketing and naming opportunity will be seen for the
life of the seats, for generations to come.”
