NASA icon, former astronaut offer insight into ‘virtual’ training

When NASA Chief Principal Engineer Evelyn Miralles joined University of Houston-Clear Lake earlier this year, she had big ideas – ideas to help propel the university technologically and sustainably into the 21st century. As UH-Clear Lake’s associate vice president for Strategic Information Initiatives and Technology she is not only bringing her vast experience to the university, but also sharing her stories. On Monday, Oct. 7, 6-8 p.m. at UHCL Pearland, 1200 Pearland Parkway, Pearland she will present “Training Astronauts for Space Travel, Virtually!”

Miralles will be joined by former astronaut Greg Chamitoff as they discuss the many hours of training that goes into preparing for space travel.

“As you know, astronauts’ rigorous training includes thousands of hours of physical activity and mental acuity,” said Miralles. “By offering the right tools, training and virtual experiences, they are able to truly serve as pioneer explorers for all of us.”

The presentation is part of the university’s 45th anniversary events that will be taking place during the first couple of weeks of October.

Admission is free. The presentation will be held in UHCL Pearland’s new Health Sciences and Classroom Building, Room 102.
