PSAT/SAT prep course students become National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists

Three Dawson High School juniors who enrolled in PSAT/SAT preparation courses offered in the Center for Executive Education at University of Houston-Clear Lake have been named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists.

Kyle Bundick, Ashley Phillips and Jordyn Taylor are among the fewer than 1% of U.S. high school students who have achieved this status. If they advance to the finalist round, they will compete for about 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth over $31 million.

“Jennifer Ledwith, who instructs the course, reviews the fundamentals of grammar, usage, reading comprehension and algebraic thinking with students,” said Brenda Guerrero, CEE’s project coordinator. “They review testing strategies and take timed exams. The courses are excellent because the class sizes are small and very syllabus-driven. Ms. Ledwith is also very proactive in her communications with parents.”

The PSAT/SAT class is offered in the spring, summer and fall through the CEE in UHCL's College of Business. In response to school district adjustments caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, CEE in UH-Clear Lake has ensured small classes accessible virtually to better prepare students for the exams. Additionally, CEE offers free informational parent and student webinars to further support students and families as they become college ready during COVID-19.
