University of Houston-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Steven Berberich and Vice President of Administration and Finance Mark Denney recognized employees’ service and dedication during the UH-Clear Lake 41st annual Faculty Staff Awards ceremony in April.

Staff awards included the recognition of Executive Director of Counseling, Health and Career Services Cindy Cook, who received the 2019 Hugh P. Avery Prize – the President’s Distinguished Staff Service Award. Formerly known as just the Distinguished Staff Service Award, it was renamed in 1991 to honor a longtime employee who initiated UHCL’s staff-recognition program. Nominees for the Avery Prize are submitted by faculty and staff and reviewed by a subcommittee that makes a recommendation to the president.

Awards for meritorious service went to four staff members:

  • Alex Malone, director of Theater and Cultural Arts in University Advancement.
  • Lien T. Pham, science lab supervisor in the College of Science and Computer Engineering.
  • Marlene Richards, police civilian supervisor in University Police.
  • Laura Wilder, senior staff assistant in Finance Operations.

The distinguished faculty awards recognize outstanding achievement in service, research and teaching, and recipients can only be nominated by their faculty colleagues.

  • Heather Kanenberg, associate professor of Social Work in the College of Human Sciences and Humanities, received the President’s Distinguished Service Award.
  • Kewei Sha, assistant professor of Computer Science and the associate director of the Cyber Security Institute in the College of Science and Engineering, received the President’s Distinguished Research Award.
  • Shreerekha Subramanian, associate professor of Humanities in the College of Human Science and Humanities received President’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

The Outstanding Lecturer Award was presented to Lecturer in Fitness and Human Performance Denise Cazes in the College of Human Sciences and Humanities, and the Outstanding Adjunct Award to Joan Mauldin in the College Education.

During the ceremony 104 faculty and staff were honored with service awards, representing more than 1,340 cumulative years of employment. Of the service awards, 30 faculty and staff received five-year awards, 37 received 10-year awards, 11 received 15-year awards, 11 received 20-year awards and five received 25-year awards. Thirty-year awards were presented to nine employees; one received a 40-year award. Twenty-nine upcoming and recent retirees were recognized as well.
