Eight Houston-area artists will be showcasing their work in the first exhibition of the new year at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art Gallery. The exhibition, titled “African American Artists,” opens Jan. 21 and continues through March 21.
Artist and exhibition co-curator Eddie Filer, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UH-Clear Lake, said that he submitted five pieces to be showcased. “I’m a portrait artist, and the pieces that I have in this show speak about some of the entertainers I grew up with,” he said. “My portraits are narrative; they include a bit more about the person to help tell the story of who they are. I might paint them in their environment, with some objects or words that show people more than just the person physically.”

Join Friday Morning Continuing Education at University of Houston-Clear Lake Friday, Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. as Associate Dean of the College of Human Sciences and Humanities Samuel Gladden investigates the ways in which Bowie stood as a Romantic “type,” a figure who brought to his own day energy, zeal, and iconoclasm that hearken back to the Romantic age.
Rising to the level of global superstar and then finding lifelong happiness in his second marriage and family life, Bowie continued to produce critically and commercially successful music, while introducing innovations in technology, marketing, and finance. Like the Romantic poets before him, truly, David Bowie changed the world.

Named after a Bob Dylan song made famous by Joan Baez, Farewell Angelina, an all-female country group featuring four powerhouse vocalists and multi-instrumentalists, will make University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater a stop on their “Women and Wine” tour on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Witt said they are a country music group for sure, but they also love to cover songs from other genres. “Some people call us Americana, some say we’re country. We’ve had our songs released to country radio but we fit a broader listening audience.”
Featured songs on their “Women and Wine” EP are two fan favorites, “Ghosts” and “More Problems.” Both were released and spotlighted on CMT. “Ghosts” stayed at the top of the fan-voted CMT 12 Pack Countdown for six weeks.
The group has never played at UH-Clear Lake before. “Look forward to a high energy show,” she said. “We love entertaining and we love to engage the audience. It’s like a rolling party,” she said. “If you’re spending your evening with us, we want it to be memorable and fun. Forget about your problems for a couple of hours.”
