Enjoy an entertaining, inexpensive evening at the movies as University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Film Series premieres “The Big Sick” on Sat. Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center Building lecture hall, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
This funny, heartfelt and intelligent movie uses its appealing leads and cross-cultural themes to prove the standard romantic comedy formula still has some fresh angles to explore. Based on the real-life courtship between comedian Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, “The Big Sick” tells the story of a Pakistan-born aspiring comedian who connects with an American graduate student after one of his standup sets, but complications arise. Tickets are $4 or free with UHCL student ID. Parking is free.

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education program will celebrate the beginning of its second year on Aug. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with a special wine-and-cheese reception to be followed by attending the Bayou Theater’s season premiere performance, “Bach and Piazzolla,” performed by Mercury: The Orchestra Redefined. The reception and Bayou Theater are in the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
The reception will highlight the fall series of the Friday Morning Continuing Education classes, which begin Sept. 29. Enjoy the company of upcoming Friday Morning presenters, including Samuel Gladden, Art Gallery Director Jeff Bowen, Bayou Theater Managing Director Alex Malone and Mercury Artistic Director Antoine Plante.
