Hispanic Heritage Month UHCL: Maria Celeste interviews Evelyn Miralles

Join a Zoom conversation between three-time Emmy award-winning journalist Maria Celeste and UH-Clear Lake’s Associate Vice President for Strategic Information Initiatives and Technology Evelyn Miralles. The presentation will take place Wednesday. Oct. 14 at 2 p.m.

In 2006, Maria Celeste was included on the cover of Newsweek as one of the 20 most powerful women of the next generation of leaders and is among the most influential Hispanic figures in social platforms.

Miralles spent her career at NASA helping astronauts prepare for space missions, and is an internationally-recognized pioneer in the field of virtual reality. She co-created spacewalk training software, in use since 2000.

They will discuss world events, journalism and the impact of education on women and minority groups. The event will include a one-hour discussion followed by an opportunity to ask questions. To join, visit the UHCL calendar.

Free COVID-19 testing available at UHCL

Anyone interested in receiving a free COVID-19 test may come to University of Houston-Clear Lake, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, to Lot G in front of Delta Building. Tests will be administered in cars at no cost Oct. 6-10 from 7 a.m. -  2 p.m. daily. Visit ReadyHarris.org for an appointment, although no appointment is necessary. UHCL to become 2020 election polling site

UH-Clear Lake has been designated a Harris County voting location for the 2020 election. Student Government Association members will be on hand to assist voters as they complete the process. Early voting begins Oct. 13 from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. and runs through Oct. 30. Voters can cast their ballots during this time in the Garden Room in Atrium I of the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd, Houston. Election Day voters may cast their ballots at the Recreation and Wellness Center from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. There are no parking fees.

Friday Morning Continuing Ed: Mexican Anti-Fascist Music

Friday Morning Continuing Education at University of Houston-Clear Lake presents a discussion of the history and importance of Mexican anti-Fascist music in the 1930s. UH-Clear Lake’s Director of Cultural Arts Eric Despard will focus on Mexican composers Manual Ponce, Carlos Chavez and Silvestre Revueltas via Zoom on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to explore unique and engaging topics each week. Discover UHCL, Graduate Preview events to be held virtually

If you’re a high school junior or senior, or a community college student looking to transfer into a four-year university, come and find out all that University of Houston-Clear Lake has to offer at Discover UHCL, to be held virtually Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Students attending the event and applying will have their $45 application fee waived.

The UHCL Graduate Preview will be held virtually Oct. 15 from 5-7 p.m. Any student looking for more information about a master’s or doctoral program should plan to attend.
