Americans observe Black History Month each February, highlighting the accomplishments and contributions of blacks throughout history and in their own community. University of Houston-Clear Lake is set to begin its own celebration of Black History Month, placing the spotlight on African American distinguished alumni, students and UH-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake.
The monthlong series of commemorations begins with a video interview with Professor Emerita of Education Anita Parrott George of Mississippi State University, who spoke about her experiences as a student activist in college during the height of the civil rights movement in a special UH-Clear Lake Friday Morning Continuing Education program in November.
UHCL Distinguished Alumni Preston Johnson Jr., who is the retired regional president of Southeast Texas at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Dr. Bernard Harris, former NASA astronaut and medical doctor, reflect on their lives, their education and their careers.
And UHCL’s black student organizations have played an integral role in the university’s history, offering students of color the opportunity to connect with each other and expand their educational experience.
This special series on Black History Month culminates in an interview with UHCL President Ira K. Blake, who will share her perspectives on her own educational journey and offers wisdom and guidance to students of all ethnicities as they overcome all the challenges they face on the path to graduation.
