UH-Clear Lake advances spot in regional rankings from U.S. News and World Report

University of Houston-Clear Lake advanced two spots in U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Best Colleges rankings, tying for 61st among 140 colleges and universities considered in the Best Regional Universities in the West.

“These rankings reflect the true value of the education our students receive at UH-Clear Lake, which is incredibly important as we continue to evolve as a four-year institution,” said UHCL President Ira K. Blake. “I am confident that UHCL’s distinction will continue to rise in our community and beyond.”

The publication releases annual rankings for the next year each September. In 2018, UHCL tied for 63rd among regional universities west after moving up 11 spots from its 2017 ranking. UHCL debuted in the 2016 listings at 81st.

In the regional category, UH-Clear Lake ranked 17th place in Top Public Schools, 58th in Best Value Schools, and 31st in Best Colleges for Veterans. Nationally, UHCL earned spots on the list of Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs and Best Undergraduate Business Programs.

Universities included in the regional ranking range from Texas and Oklahoma westward to Oregon and Alaska. Universities on the list are scored based on several criteria, including retention and graduation rates, faculty resources, student selectivity and alumni giving.

This year, the criteria included social mobility, which measures a university’s success of graduating students who have received federal Pell Grants. Since students receiving these grants typically come from lower-income households, this new criterion helps assess support for students from underserved backgrounds, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s methodology.

For the regional rankings, the organization compares universities that offer a full range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs and a limited number of doctoral programs. UHCL’s academic offerings include more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degrees and three doctoral programs. Visit UHCL’s full ranking profile online.
