UHCL fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 at NRG Arena

Over 1,270 University of Houston-Clear Lake students are expected to cross the stage
at two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, Dec. 15, at NRG Arena, 1 NRG Park, Houston. A total of 850
will receive bachelor’s degrees; 424 will receive their master’s degree and 14 will
receive their doctorate and represent summer 2019 graduates and fall 2019 candidates
for graduation.
At noon, the College of Education will confer degrees to 204 candidates, and the College of Business will honor 353. Judith Marquez, professor of bilingual and multicultural education will deliver the commencement
address. Marquez joined UH-Clear Lake in 1989 as a visiting assistant professor of
bilingual education, English as a Second Language, and multicultural studies. In 2009,
she became a full, tenured professor and since 2015, has served as department chair
of Counseling, Special Education and Diversity in the College of Education.
At 5 p.m., 188 from the College of Science and Engineering will receive their degrees, as will 271 from the College of Human Sciences and Humanities. The commencement speaker will be Dorothea Lerman, professor of behavior analysis and director of UHCL’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Lerman joined the UHCL faculty in 2004 and has secured more than $2 million in grants
and contracts to support her work.
These participants will join more than 70,000 others who have graduated from UHCL.
The university began in 1974, admitting juniors, seniors and graduate students. In
2011, the university gained approval from the state to add freshman-and sophomore-level
courses to its roster and the first freshman class entered in 2014.
NRG Arena is located beside NRG Stadium and the Astrodome. Guests do not need tickets
to attend. There is a fee for parking and attendants only take cash. Parking information can
be found online.
The UHCL Alumni Association is hosting a reception for graduates and their families on Friday, Dec. 13, 6-7:30
p.m., in Atrium II of the Bayou Building. There will be food, music and the opportunity
to decorate your mortar board. The event is free. Find out more about the Soaring Hawks event online.
