UHCL Pearland offers information sessions for new doctoral program
March 5, 2018 | UHCL Staff
University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus is offering information sessions
for those interested in advancing their career by obtaining a Doctor of Education
in Educational Leadership. Sessions will be held on March 8 and April 5 in room 111
from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
As part of the newly approved cohort model, students can specialize in curriculum
and instruction, special populations, higher education, or superintendent effective
in fall 2018.
“We are hoping to promote this new program to teachers and administrators in the Pearland
area to come to UHCL Pearland Campus to take classes,” said Erica Chance, coordinator
of enrollment management at UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus. “The first 20 students
who are accepted into the program will receive a $1,000 discount scholarship on their
tuition.”
Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership Antonio Corrales is the new program
director at the Pearland Campus and the UHCL campus, as well as a graduate of UHCL’s
educational leadership doctoral program. “Most of the doctoral classes are a hybrid
between online and face-to-face,” Corrales said. “The rationale behind our approach
is that we truly believe in the networking opportunities that meeting new people may
bring. Students will be attending classes with current assistant superintendents,
central office administrators, and higher education administrators.”
Corrales added that most professors are highly connected and constantly helping schools
improve. “I’m a vivid example of this reality,” he said. “I found jobs while doing
my master’s and doctoral programs at UHCL. Because the program is configured in a
cohort model, it allows students to have greater support from their peers. At the
same time, the number of students in the cohorts is no more than 20, which makes it
easier for professors to provide more personalized attention.”
Students enrolled in this program can anticipate graduation within just three years.
“I hear stories from students spending five to seven years to complete their programs
because lack of support. That doesn’t happen here at UHCL and I think it is one of
our biggest strengths,” Corrales said.
