UHCL prof receives top educational administration honor
Associate Professor of Educational Leadership John Decman received the TCPEA 2019 Educator of the Year award.

John Decman, associate professor of educational leadership at University of Houston-Clear Lake, received the Texas Council of Professors of Educational Administration 2019 Educator of the Year award on Jan. 27 at the TCPEA Midwinter Conference in Austin.

Decman said the award winner is selected through a nomination process. Wesley Hickey, dean of the College of Education and Psychology at University of Texas at Tyler, nominated him for the award.

"I've known John for 16 years and he does a great job mentoring and coaching upcoming educational leaders," Hickey said. "Even in the past year, certification requirements for principals have changed and he's been an influencer at the state level. He is helping to shape what will go on with the next generation of educational leaders. Few people prepare individual students as well as he does."

"I have been a part of this organization since 2001, which is the year I started at UH-Clear Lake," Decman said. "It's incredibly humbling to be recognized by this group."
