Belinda Marshall was named Student of the Year by the Gulf Coast chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals. Marshall received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Science at University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2020 and is currently working toward her Master of Science in Occupational Health and Safety.
The primary purpose of ASSP's Gulf Coast Chapter is to facilitate networking opportunities between students and industry professionals. "It's a great student organization and I was able to get more people enthusiastic and involved with it," Marshall said.
"Belinda was very active in this organization when she was a student at College of the Mainland, and she proved herself," said Professor of Occupational Safety and Health Magdy Akladios, who is also the faculty adviser for UH-Clear Lake's ASSP chapter. "We can see a lot of potential in her leadership skills. She brought a lot of students into the organization."
"I'm passionate about this because I love math and science and I wanted to find a way to help people," she said. "I started out with an interest in medicine. But, I learned that in any industry, you need a safety expert. I wanted to be in a 'helping' profession and that's why I changed my mind from medicine to this."
UHCL's ASSP was also named Student Chapter of the Year and Akladios was named Faculty Adviser of the Year.
